Small Business Initiative Update

Jun 24, 2024 | Uncategorized

March 2024 marked the official launch of University City Partners’ Small Business Initiative (SBI). This initiative aims to understand and address the needs of local University City businesses, providing essential support to foster their growth and success.

The UCP team has proactively engaged with over 1,000 businesses, with 396 of these located within Municipal Service District #5 or UC trade area boundaries. Through over 80 surveys, it became clear that marketing, promotions, social media, and exposure are critical needs for these growing enterprises. In response, UCP has provided nearly $30,000 in direct support services to local businesses.

Furthermore, UCP has partnered with a local PR firm to support approximately 50 businesses with website development, marketing strategies, promotions, and a variety of other services. This collaboration has significantly boosted the visibility and operational capabilities of these businesses.

The SBI extends beyond immediate support, fostering connections between local businesses and major institutions like Atrium Health and UNC Charlotte. In May, UCP hosted a Power Networking event, bringing together over 50 University City businesses to network and introduce themselves to the local community.

In June, UCP recorded nine podcast episodes featuring diverse businesses from University City. These episodes, which will be available in the coming months, aim to highlight the unique stories and contributions of local entrepreneurs.

Additionally, SBI has shown its commitment to community support by providing over $6,400 in gift certificates from local businesses such as Boardwalk Billy’s, Majestic Reign Massage, and Zapata’s to CMPD officers and Newell Elementary teachers.

Looking ahead, the SBI will continue its outreach efforts and direct support to the University City business community. Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities as UCP remains dedicated to fostering a thriving local economy!
