Computer Science Immersion School

Computer Science Immersion School will be at former Newell Elementary School

The new Computer Science Immersion School for grades K-5 opening next fall in University City will have an information session for parents and other interested people 6-8 pm Feb. 9 at University City YMCA, 8100 Old Mallard Creek Road.

The school will open in August in the former Newell Elementary School building at 8601 Old Concord Road, just west of East W.T. Harris Boulevard. Initial enrollment will be about 550 students.

This will be the first magnet school in North Carolina offering full computer-science coding as part of its curriculum.

At the information session on Feb. 9, Principal Toyia Matthews will explain the new magnet school’s program, application process, student transportation and other aspects of the new program, including its use of Code to the Future.

About Code to the Future

An independent education program, Code to the Future will provide learning materials and training plus two experts in residence – an instructional coach and implementation manager – to work with students and staff. Learn more at https://www.codetothefuture.com/

Matthews recently outlined some of the key points of the new magnet school:

  • What makes this school special/stand out? The immersion of computer science in all content areas will foster higher-level thinking, including; computational thinking, sequential thinking, critical thinking, and creative thinking with a STEM focus.
  • What will students enjoy about going to this school? The students will enjoy the learning environment that promotes their exploration, creativity, and design thinking. Through tackling authentic problems using manipulatives and technology, our students will bridge the path from being consumers of technology to becoming creators of technology content.
  • What will parents like about the school? The parents will have a sense of pride and excitement through providing their children the opportunity to attend a school that prepares them for a path with limitless opportunities. Our school will encourage parents to learn alongside their children in a safe, engaging, and innovative environment.
