BLE construction is ramping up, and with that, pedestrian safety around construction zones is not only a hot topic but a vital issue. With that in mind, a new video will hit Facebook and Twitter on Friday with a great lesson from CATS on how to safely walk near light-rail construction zones.
How to view the video
Charlotte Area Transit System plans to post the new BLE safety video Friday on the BLE’s two social-media channels.
If you don’t generally use Facebook or Twitter, here are the safety points covered in the video. “Pedestrian safety is our priority!” CATS Spokesperson, Sayra Brynn said. “Everyone can contribute to a safe environment.” The video offers these tips:
- When walking near a construction zone, LISTEN for instructions by contractors and WATCH for vehicular activity.
- Pay attention to your surroundings.
- Do not be a distracted pedestrian.
- Look for “Sidewalk Closed” or “Construction Zone” signs that may be along your walking route and follow “Detour” signs.
- Do not go through construction zones.
- Cross at intersections, marked crosswalks or signalized intersections.
- Mind your surroundings, be extra careful and stay alert near construction zones!

CATS hopes to begin service the light-rail line between UNC Charlotte and downtown in 2017, so we will deal with construction for the next three years. CATS and the City of Charlotte have created ways for the public to learn about BLE progress. These include:
