Hospital staff help load school health-room supplies in 2014.

Twice a year, in August and January, large boxes of healthcare supplies are delivered to the local schools. These boxes brim with Band-Aids, ice packs, thermometer covers, hand sanitizers and more.

The supplies come from a place that’s used to dealing with a lot bigger medical issues than kids’ scraped knees and dirty hands: Carolinas HealthCare System University hospital.

Carolinas HealthCare System University began donating health-room supplies to local schools more than five years ago. The donations are a free service for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in the University City and Lake Norman area, as well as some local church-based and private schools.

“It’s important to us that we support the community beyond the hospital,” says Joe Labovitz, vice president of operations at Carolinas HealthCare System University. “We want to see kids healthy and in school, and the Health Room Supply Donation program is a great way for us to do that.”

University City Schools receiving supplies include:

  • Countryside Montessori Schools
  • Croft Elementary School
  • David Cox Road Elementary
  • Highland Creek Elementary School
  • James Martin Middle School
  • Mallard Creek Elementary School
  • Mallard Creek High School
  • Morehead STEM Academy
  • Newell Elementary School
  • Northside Christian School
  • Ridge Road Middle School
  • Stoney Creek Elementary School
  • University Meadows Elementary
  • Vance High School
  • Winding Springs Elementary School
