More than 50,000 vehicles per day travel North Tryon Street near UNC Charlotte.

The N.C. Department of Transportation announced Sept. 23 that it plans to close southbound lanes on North Tryon Street (U.S. 29) over Mallard Creek on Wednesday, Oct. 15, weather permitting. The closure will last through May 2015 during the first phase of a $4.4 million project to replace both bridges over Mallard Creek with much wider structures. This will take place concurrent with construction of Charlotte’s Blue Line Extension project.

Detour plans

While the southbound lanes remain closed, motorists will be detoured along Mallard Creek Church Road, I-85 and Harris Boulevard.
  Once the southbound bridge reopens, the northbound bridge will close. The new southbound bridge will be wide enough to handle both northbound and southbound traffic. Construction necessary for the Blue Line Extension will be performed while the northbound bridge is closed.

NCDOT staff will work with City and CATS (Charlotte Area Transit) engineers during the project to minimize impact to motorists as much as possible. NCDOT also has developed a detour plan for the Mallard Creek Greenway, which runs under the bridges.
