Peach, Please! The Juicy Journey From Ancient China to University City

Carolina (Peach) On My Mind
North Carolina now ranks in the top ten U.S. peach-producing states, with most orchards clustered in the Sandhills. Locals even named two towns—Candor and Peachland—after the beloved stone fruit. Why so good here? Hot days, cool nights, and sandy soil coax out extra sweetness, meaning July peaches rarely make it past your car ride home.

Pit-Stop Trivia

Fun Fact Quick Bite
Clingstone vs. Freestone Early-season “cling” peaches have flesh that hugs the pit; later “freestones” practically fall off the seed—perfect for cobbler.
Gaffney’s “Peachoid” That gigantic water tower on I-85 (yes, it looks like a peach) holds one million gallons—and plenty of Instagram hashtags.
Fuzz Science The peach’s velvety coat protects the fruit from excess sunlight and moisture loss—nature’s built-in sunscreen and spa mask!

Health Perks That Make You Blush

A medium peach is 88 percent water, packs Vitamin C for immune support, Vitamin A for vision and skin, plus gut-friendly fiber and antioxidants that fight free radicals—all for about 60 calories. In other words, dessert just turned into a wellness plan.

“An apple is an excellent thing — until you have tried a peach.”
— George du Maurier

Where to Get Your Summer Fix

Skip the grocery imports and taste a peach picked yesterday. The University City Farmers Market runs every Saturday, 10 AM–2 PM, May – October at NOVEL University Place (6010 Jasmine Lane). Grab tree-ripened Sandhills peaches, peach-jalapeño jam, or a sun-warm wedge pie—then stroll the lakeside boardwalk, sip cold brew, and meet the growers who make “Just Peachy” more than a cliché.
