City approves $9.5 million to build new University City police station

The future home of the University City Police Division took a big step forward in August, when Charlotte City Council approved spending more than $9.5 million for its construction.

The new building will be at 8452 N. Tryon Street at Ken Hoffman Drive, within a quarter mile of the McCullough Drive LYNX station and next to Charlotte Fire Station 27.

The building will have 16,081 square feet of space. The University City Division currently has its headquarters nearby at University Executive Park. More

Grand opening on Oct. 3 of new Chick-fil-A University Place

The seemingly always busy Chick-fil-A University Place is relocating to its new and much bigger home nearby, at 8700 University Executive Park Drive. at West W.T. Harris Blvd.

The grand opening is set for Oct. 3. The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting at 9 a.m.

The new restaurant building and grounds will be double the size of the current store on J.W. Clay Boulevard, including both a much bigger kitchen and a high-volume drive-through system with two lanes capable of holding up to 34 vehicles.

The University Place location will close for good on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Chick-fil-A worked with city and University City Partners planners on site design issues such as vehicle screening and sidewalks.

Worship Night on Oct. 1 at the Chick-fil-A University Place

The public is invited to take part in a special worship night at 8 pm Oct. 1 at the soon-to-open new location of Chick-fil-A University Place, 8700 University Executive Park Drive.

The pre-opening night of worship will offer faith, community and fellowship and the chance to be among the first people to see the new store, says franchise owner Rob Rogers. Music will be provided by the Nikao Church worship team.

Groundbreaking for Mallard Pointe apartments

High Associates will break ground this fall on a new apartment community beside the Cochran Commons shopping center and Mallard Pointe office building at West Mallard Creek Church Road and David Taylor Drive.

Plans approved last year by Charlotte City Council allow up to 260 apartments in four-story buildings. The 11.7 acre site is beside High Associates’ Mallard Pointe office building.

A new traffic light at the intersection that began operation earlier this year provides much needed help for David Taylor Drive motorists seeking to cross or turn left at Mallard Creek Church Road.

Future retail is approved for University Research Park entrance

The Charlotte City Council recently approved a rezoning that will bring shops and restaurants to the University Research Park entrance at David Taylor Drive.

Plans call for replacing the existing landscaped entrance areas flanking David Taylor Drive at Mallard Creek Church Road with two commercial buildings – one on each side of the entrance.

The one-story buildings will have a combined 15,000 square feet of space plus outdoor open space and seating areas and sidewalks linking the grounds to a planned multi-use path along Mallard Creek Church Road.

The new buildings will use existing parking that serves the nearby One Resource Square and Two Resource Square office buildings.

As part of the project, the petitioner, Stanchion Asset Partners of Charlotte will work with University City Partners to implement a new landscape and hardscape treatment of the intersection. Details
