The Back to School Children’s Health Fair drew thousands of children and adults last summer.

Camino means “path” in Spanish – and the path has indeed been long and winding for University City’s Camino Community Center.

What began as an outreach to Cuba has evolved into a beehive of learning, healthy living and care in University City.

On Nov. 29, the center will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a reception, dinner and dancing – and we’re invited!

The event will take place at the center, 133 Stetson Drive, a short walk from the University City Boulevard LYNX light-rail station.

The little center that could

The Camino Community Center serves more than 20,000 people yearly from its facility in an industrial area near North Tryon Street and University City Boulevard. Map

The center and Mecklenburg County will hold a free pharmacy event on Nov. 30.

Local church leader Rusty Price and his congregation launched the Camino Community Center in 2003 to offer medical care to the region’s rapidly growing Latino population.

The center has evolved into a non-profit provider of services to people of all backgrounds. Among its programs are the Bethesda medical clinic, thrift store, food pantry, small-business incubator, Zumba fitness classes, leadership development and homeless support.

Thousands of children annually receive free physicals, health education and backpacks full of school supplies.

Strong community support

The center receives strong support from numerous corporations and foundations including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, United Way, Compare Foods, UNC Charlotte and University City Partners.
