A Hometown Approach to Policing

Mar 5, 2025 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

For CMPD Lt. John Gorrod, keeping University City safe isn’t just a job—it’s personal. Having lived in the area while attending UNC Charlotte and with family still calling the neighborhood home, he has a vested interest in crime prevention and quality of life issues.
“This feels like my hometown more than any other division I’ve worked in,” says Lt. Gorrod. “My wife and I both graduated from UNCC, we attend games, and I see firsthand how our policing strategies impact the community.”
This deep connection fuels his commitment to making University City a safer place, not only through enforcement but by building strong community relationships.

Strengthening Partnerships for a Safer Community
Lt. Gorrod sees a unique opportunity to leverage his alma mater’s alumni network to foster partnerships with local businesses. By strengthening relationships with alumni-owned businesses, CMPD can gain more buy-in for its initiatives, including employee wellness programs and crime prevention efforts.

He is also focused on proactive policing strategies and community education to reduce crime trends, particularly related to car thefts and break-ins. “We’re working hard to reduce violent crime by promoting community engagement and using targeted policing techniques to address known offenders,” he explains.

Innovative Crime Prevention Strategies
CMPD is also increasing awareness of its FUSUS program, which allows residents and business owners to register their exterior security cameras with the city. While this doesn’t grant CMPD direct access to camera feeds, it helps officers quickly identify potential footage that could aid investigations. “This initiative enhances our ability to solve crimes and identify suspects while maintaining privacy,” says Lt. Gorrod.

His team also works closely with UNC Charlotte Police, addressing common crime trends and suspects, and plans to introduce joint training between CMPD and UNCC officers to build stronger relationships.

Community Engagement: More Than Just Calls for Service
One of the most effective tools in Lt. Gorrod’s approach is community engagement. Through Community Roll Calls and Coffee with a Cop, CMPD officers connect with residents and business owners in a casual setting, fostering open conversations about concerns, safety initiatives, and how policing strategies impact daily life.

“These events help us put names to faces, build transparency, and ensure that when people see an officer, it’s not just in response to a crisis,” he says.

A Leader Who Sees the Bigger Picture
Lt. Gorrod’s leadership isn’t just about reducing crime—it’s about making sure every officer understands their impact on the community. “I remind my officers that their work is seen and appreciated. Their actions directly affect the lives of the people here, and we want to make sure that impact is a positive one.”

With a hometown heart and a strategic vision, Lt. Gorrod is making University City a safer, more connected place—one partnership at a time.
