In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables and artisan goods, the University City Farmers Market also features lots of other locally made items. Lee Valle is the founder of Vigueur Fragrances. Originally from The Bronx, she now calls Concord home now. Find her each week at the market now through October.
Why did you start Vigueur Fragrances?
Vigueur Fragrances is a rebrand of Vigorwicks Candle Co., which I launched during the Covid-19 pandemic out of my passion for home decor and candle fragrances. Before starting this venture, I worked with a Fortune 500 company for seven years, and I transitioned to running my business full-time last February.
What’s the best part of your business?
The opportunity to nurture my creativity while being home with my family full-time. It’s fulfilling and brings me so much joy to receive such great feedback from customers, all while doing something I love.
Why did you start your business in University City?
I love this community and appreciate the strong support for small businesses! The area’s diversity and vibrant atmosphere align perfectly with my business values and goals.
What do you like most about the University City Farmers Market?
This is my third year vending at the University City Farmer’s Market. Participating in the Farmers Market allows me to connect directly with locals, share my products, and receive direct feedback. It’s a great opportunity to also connect with other entrepreneurs, exchange ideas, explore collaboration possibilities, and foster a sense of community.
What do you love most about University City?
I love the vibrant culture, diverse population, and supportive community. The combination of academic influence and local charm creates a uniquely inspiring and welcoming environment. When I’m in the area, you can find me exploring the greenway, grabbing pizza at Giacomo’s, or enjoying time with my family at Top Golf.
What makes your company special?
My company is distinguished in the market by its commitment to sustainability and handmade quality, offering premium products that are safe and toxin-free. It’s very important that I prioritize exceptional customer service, ensuring each interaction exceeds expectations. What truly distinguishes me from big-box candle companies is the passion I infuse into every aspect of my work and my discerning eye for minimalistic beauty. This commitment guarantees that every customer not only receives a product of the highest quality but also feels special and enjoys a thoughtful and distinctive experience.
What might surprise people about your business?
People might be surprised to know that I run my company entirely solo. From marketing strategies to customer service, packaging, creating/designing products, and managing social media — I handle it all myself. I also have a little studio set up at home where I do everything from brainstorming new ideas to fulfilling orders. It’s a one-woman show! But that keeps things personal and ensures that every aspect of the business reflects my passion and dedication.
How can people find your products, other than at the University City Farmers Market?
My products are also available on my website, VigueurFragrances.com, where you’ll also find a calendar listing where I’ll be vending in Charlotte and surrounding areas. My company has also just been announced as the winner of the 2024 American Dream Project! This incredible initiative is designed to foster small business growth by giving local entrepreneurs the opportunity to fulfill their dream of owning a store. Starting this October, I’ll be conducting business at the Carolina Mall in Concord, where my products will be for sale and I’ll be hosting daily candle-making workshops. I’m also raising funds to help with designing the space and preparing it with everything needed for a successful opening.
