These buildings are reshaping UNC Charlotte

Construction projects totaling more than $300 million are reshaping our growing UNC Charlotte campus. Here’s a quick look:

Students packed the UREC for its ribbon cutting on Jan. 8

The ribbon cutting for the university’s 160,000 square-foot recreation center drew an exuberant crowd on Jan. 8.

Located at 8827 Craver Road beside the Popp Martin Student Center, the newly named UREC features an indoor and outdoor pool, 4 multi-purpose courts, 5 multi-purpose studios, 80 group fitness classes a week and outdoor basketball, pickleball and volleyball court.

Student fees will pay for the $66 million building.

Marriott Hotel and Conference Center

The crane now towering over the future campus hotel and conference center’s construction site can be seen from miles around.

The first two stories of the conference center and hotel are taking shape at the corner of North Tryon Street and J.W. Clay Boulevard – adjacent to the J.W. Clay Blvd LYNX light-rail station.

The estimated completion date is spring 2021.

New Science Building

The new science building is set for completion in spring 2021

Campus leaders see the $101 million future science building as transformational and vital to UNC Charlotte’s academic advancement.

“This one-stop-shop for our chemistry, biology and physics programs is an indisputable necessity,” said Chancellor Philip L. Dubois.

The building will replace the current Burson science building, built in 1985.

The new science building will bring together instructional and research laboratories, faculty offices, graduate student workspace and collaboration space into a unified center for learning and research for chemistry, biology, and physics.

Construction is moving quickly. As of mid-January, steel erection was underway, along with fireproofing, roof decking and parapet framing.  The estimated completion date is spring 2021.

Residence Hall XVI in South Village

Residence Hall XVI

Construction is expected to start soon on the new residence hall

Construction is expected to start in the next month on a five-story residence hall on the site of the former high-rise, Moore Hall, which was demolished last year.

The $58 million project in the South Village will pay for demolishing both Moore Hall and nearby Sanford Hall and building the new residence hall with about 750 beds and additional student space.

The estimated completion date is fall 2021. Sanford Hall’s demolition is scheduled for late summer 2021.
