NYD5K donation

Charles Robinson with The Hub at Bread of Life receives a $1,000 donation, presented by Elaine Jones with Atrium Health, the NYD5K event sponsor

Proceeds from the New Year’s Day 5K down North Tryon Street brought smiles and $1,000 checks to the leaders of four groups that help people in need in University City.

Atrium Health, sponsor of the New Year’s Day 5K, presented checks to Hope Street Food Pantry, the Camino  Community Center Food Pantry, the Jamil Niner Student Pantry and the Hub at Bread of Life.

The inaugural running of the New Year’s Day 5K took place along North Tryon Street from the Old Concord Road station to midway between the McCullough Drive and JW Clay Blvd Stations.

The mission of the New Year’s Day 5K was to raise awareness about hunger in Charlotte.

Checks were presented by Atrium Health at the January meeting of the UCity Family Zone, a collaborative, place-based initiative empowering communities to increase opportunity and improve quality of life! UNC Charlotte and University City Partners are among 26 groups and religious institutions involved with UCity Family Zone.

The NYD5K is the first of several 5K races and related events throughout the year in University City that have banded together under the umbrella organization, the Healthy UCity Race Series. The next Healthy UCity event, the 49er Gold Rush 5K, will take place on Feb. 1 at UNC Charlotte.
