Wanted: Artists to help capture CLT history

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department is planning to build a new police station on North Tryon Street for our University City Division – and the Charlotte Arts and Science Council is seeking artists to help bring the station to life.

Specifically, it is seeking artists to create pieces that celebrate the history of Charlotte. Interested? Deadline is Sept. 28 to apply. Here are the details.

Project Background

The City of Charlotte and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department are building a new station for University City Division officers, to be located at 8446 North Tryon Street.

The two-story facility will sit on a 1.82-acre site at the corner of North Tryon Street and Ken Hoffman Drive, adjacent to the existing Charlotte Mecklenburg Fire Station #27.

Although independent of each other, the two facilities will share access to parking areas and some other features of the site.

CMPD University Division serves a diverse population of approximately 150,000 residents in addition, to those who commute to the area daily, and the travelers who use the North Tryon corridor as a route to popular destinations in North and East Mecklenburg County.

With the aid of University City Partners (a not-for-profit planning organization), a holistic approach to design has been employed for the site, streetscape improvements coupled with landscape design, and exterior material choices is intended to create a unified block that is responsive to the surrounding infrastructure and future plans for the locale.

The selected artist will work with the ASC, staff from the City of Charlotte’s Engineering and Property Management Department, ADW Architects, CMPD representatives, University City Partners, and local communities to create an impactful artwork that responds to the parameters of the site, the aesthetics of the architecture, and the character of the University City neighborhood.
