North America’s largest privately owned homebuilder could soon become University City’s leading townhome builder.
Mattamy Homes plans to build three townhome communities within University Research Park and a fourth nearby, if Charlotte City Council approves. Rezoning hearings for two sites in the research park will be held on Nov. 20.
Mattamy Homes has built more than 90,000 homes, mostly in Florida, Arizona, Minnesota, Charlotte and Canada. The company is building in nine neighborhoods in the Charlotte market including Meridale near I-485 in University City.
Products in the Charlotte area include townhomes starting in the upper $200s in Ayrshire (Fort Mill, SC), single-family homes from the mid-$200s at Meridale and higher-end single-family homes starting in the $500s in Lawson (Waxhaw).
General community plans
If Charlotte City Council approves the rezoning requests, Mattamy will be the first builder to offer for-sale homes within University Research Park.
All four townhome neighborhoods being proposed here by Mattamy would feature buildings of up to three stories. All homes would have garages – some with entrances from the front and some with entrances at the rear, via small alleys.
All public and private streets would have planting strips and sidewalks on both sides of the street.
University City Partners is working with Mattamy Homes and city staff on the overall design of the three communities located within University Research Park. These details could continue to evolve following the rezoning hearings.
Upcoming hearings
Rezoning hearings are usually held the third Monday of each month, starting at 6 pm, in the main meeting room of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. 4th St.
The Charlotte City Council typically votes on whether to accept or reject the final rezoning plan within one to two months of the public hearing.
