About the Cross Charlotte Trail

The City of Charlotte is partnering with Mecklenburg County to create a 30+-mile trail and greenway facility that will stretch from the City of Pineville through Center City and on to the UNC Charlotte campus and Cabarrus County line. Voters have approved $30 million in capital-improvement bonds for the project, with another $5 million in transportation bonds being proposed for 2018.

Once completed, the Cross Charlotte Trail will allow residents to travel seamlessly from one end of Charlotte to the other. Approximately 140,000 residents and 130,000 jobs will be within walking distance of the proposed trail and the adjacent greenways that connect to it.

About the Hidden Valley segment of the Cross Charlotte Trail

This project will complete a new segment of the Cross Charlotte Trail through the Hidden Valley neighborhood from approximately Wellingford Street (across from Compare Foods) to North Tryon Street at Orr Road.

The project team will work with the community to identify locations that will connect the trail to the area’s broader bicycle and pedestrian network as well as to the LYNX Blue Line Extension.

The specific project limits and trail alignment will be defined during the planning and design phases and will be posted on the project webpage and shared with nearby residents and businesses once they are determined.

Hidden Valley project goals

The goals for this segment of the trail are the following:

  • Comfortable – Separated from streets and traffic as much as possible within project budget and other constraints
  • Accessible and bicycle-friendly – Hard surface suitable for bikes and wheelchairs, smooth turns and limited slopes to meet ADA requirements
  • Enjoyable – Amenities to enhance enjoyment and safety, such as signage, benches, trashcans, landscaping, aesthetic treatments and public art
  • Expandable – Provide opportunities for additional connections and amenities in the future

Public involvement

The project team will engage nearby residents, businesses and other stakeholders in numerous ways throughout the planning process. Engagement opportunities may include charrettes, walking tours and public meetings. Details will be shared with residents and businesses once they are determined, and they will be posted on this page and on the Citywide Events Calendar.
