Money to pave the last stretch of the Mallard Creek Greenway has been cut from the proposed 2017-18 County Budget. Tonight (June 5) and this week, County Commissioners must hear loud and clear from many people that we want $1 million restored to finish paving Mallard Creek Greenway.
If you agree, we need you to:
- Speak tonight at the Mecklenburg Budget Hearing.
- Contact all board members this week to restore funding.
Details of greenway project
The preliminary county budget for 2017-18 included $1 million to pave the 1 last mile of gravel trail on the heavily traveled Mallard Creek Greenway that links UNC Charlotte, University Research Park and several neighborhoods as well as the Toby and Clark’s Creek greenways. That funding was dropped in the County Manager’s Recommended Budget for FY 2017-2018 presented on May 30, along with $6 million for other greenway projects.
Why the urgency
The County Board can restore the funding, but time is running out!
The County Board will hold its public hearing on the budget at 6 pm TONIGHT, June 5, in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, located at 600 East Fourth Street downtown.
“The purpose of the public hearing is to receive public comment on the County Manager’s Recommended Budget for FY 2017- 2018 and to take action as may be deemed appropriate.”
The board is scheduled to adopt a final budget on June 20.
How you can influence the budget
- TONIGHT – Speak in favor of restoring the funds at tonight’s public hearing. YOU MUST SIGN UP TO SPEAK AT THE MEETING CHAMBER BEFORE THE HEARING AT 6 PM. (Learn more)
- ASAP THIS WEEK – Email or call each County Board member about the importance of restoring this money to the county budget. If possible, include personal stories about how you use the greenway and how paving this last segment will help users like you. Contact information is listed below.
- Greenways are free and available to everyone. They are the most requested investment by residents.
Make your voice heard by asking commissioners to vote FOR the proposed $7 million dollar annual budget line item that includes funding for Mallard Creek Greenway.
Sincerely,
Darlene Heater, Executive Director
