If you wonder what’s happening next in University City, register now to hear the person who’s most likely to know. University City Partners Executive Director Darlene Heater will give her annual University City Update on Oct. 13 at a luncheon meeting of the Charlotte Chamber’s University City Chapter.

The public is welcome to attend, as well.

“I will talk about development that’s in the pipeline. I will also talk about creating a vision for University City as well as working through those devilish details” in shaping that vision,” Heater said. “Equally important, our team is working hard to do both.”

The Oct. 13 luncheon at Hilton Charlotte University Place is among several ways that the Charlotte Chamber’s University City Chapter helps Chamber members in University City to network, grow their businesses, learn about community issues and opportunities and also enjoy the many benefits of belonging to the Charlotte Chamber.

So much to talk about!

Heater will have much to share at this year’s luncheon, given both the rapid pace of change across our central business district and University City Partners’ ambitious plans.

Private development over the past year has included plans for hundreds of apartment homes near three future light-rail stations; five hotels announced, started or completed; new retail buildings at University Place; and two new Duke Energy buildings and several other building renovations to accommodate growth in University Research Park.

On the public front, work continues on the $1.1 billion LYNX Blue Line Extension light-rail line between uptown and UNC Charlotte; NC voters approved $90 million for a new science building at the university earlier this year; and on Sept. 22, the university announced its $200 million “Exponential” capital campaign.

New plans and planning director

Heater will also talk about UCP’s efforts to develop plans to guide some of the changes, and about Tobe Holmes, who joined the staff as planning and development director earlier this year.

Holmes previously served as director for another transit-driven hotbed of redevelopment, Charlotte’s Historic South End.
