Aug 9, 2016 | Events

school suppliesFourteen University City businesses and non-profits and their employees are collecting supplies this month for students AND teachers at seven schools serving University City.

University City Connect, a coalition of businesses and non-profits dedicated to helping our students succeed, is coordinating the annual “Stock The Closet” campaign.

Schools receiving these supplies include:

  • Hidden Valley Elementary
  • Nathaniel Alexander Elementary
  • Newell Elementary
  • John Motley Morehead K-8 STEM Academy
  • Martin Luther King Middle School
  • James Martin Middle School
  • Vance High School

Starting the school year off right

The seven schools serve several thousand students from throughout University City and north Charlotte. Many come from lower-income families. The goal of “Stock the Closet” is to ensure that all students and their teachers start the school year with the materials they need for successful learning.

  • Supplies for students include: notebooks, composition books, calculators, pens, pencils, crayons and erasers.
  • Classroom supplies include: copy paper, post-it notes and dry markers and dry erasers.

Many businesses, groups working for our students

University City Connect is working with the 14 businesses and nonprofits to stage the campaign, which started Monday and runs through Aug. 26. The group is handling logistics such as collection boxes, posters and social media publicity.

Groups and businesses taking part include: Allen Tate Realtors – University City, Allstate, Areva, BB&T, Chick-fil-A University Place, Classic Graphics, Enterprise, Fox Sports, Innovation Park, NSC Financial, University City Partners, University City YMCA, UNC Charlotte and Wells Fargo.

You can help Stock the Closet, too!

Anyone wanting to donate school supplies can bring them to the Allen Tate Realtors – University City office at 145 West W.T. Harris Blvd. Call the office at 704-547-8900 for more information.

Also, University City Connect welcomes additional businesses and groups wanting to take part in its Stock The Closet campaign.
