Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-5. Our business community is already showing its support in significant ways including a major donation by Sam’s Club and the raising of $25,000 for scholarships via our recent Governors Village 5K and Fun Run.

Sam’s Club Donates to Morehead STEM Academy

To kick off teacher appreciation efforts for our schools, Sam’s Club in University City responded to a need voiced by Morehead STEM Academy.  Teachers from Morehead STEM Academy graciously accepted two microwave ovens and a small refrigerator for their conference room, both donated by Sam’s Club along with a BIG thanks for all the faculty and staff do for the students in University City.

“We want to contribute to the growth and development of this area and let the public know we are still here,” says Chris Nelson, Club Manager. Sam’s Club is located in University Place.  “We also support the Governor’s Village schools and do what we can to help them and the students.  We also help sponsor the Chick-fil-A Governors Village 5K race.  In addition to financial support, our volunteers help set up and clean up the race.”

Along with donating to local schools, the University City Sam’s Club also gives $10,000 away each year to up to 10 charities, 75% of which are local.

Governors Village 5K and Fun Run generate $25,000 for scholarships and more

Runners warm up for the Governors Village 5K.

The third annual Chick-fil-A University Place Governors Village 5K and Fun Run drew several hundred participants, business volunteers, parents and students to Nathaniel Alexander Elementary School on April 16. Many runners went home with trophies, and several students have a strong start toward college with scholarships made possible by the day’s activities.

Rob Rogers, whose Chick-fil-A store is the event’s co-partner, said that the event raised a total of $25,000 for the four schools. The event is co-sponsored by Chick-fil-A University Place and the four Governors Village schools – Vance High, Martin Middle, Nathaniel Alexander Elementary and Morehead STEM.

After the races were over, many people stayed to enjoy music, free food, bouncing in inflatable play rooms and visiting interactive sponsor areas.

Teacher Appreciation Day May 3 at Chick-fil-A

Rob Rogers, owner of the Chick-fil-A at University Place, is the driving force behind University City Connect, the business-community support group for the four Governors Village Schools. His store and several other Chick-fil-A’s in the Charlotte metro area are offering their own thanks to local educators for Teacher Appreciation Week: a free Chick-fil-A biscuit or Chicken Sandwich from 6:30 am to 10 pm on May 3.
