The ambitious project to create a 26-mile greenway across Mecklenburg County reaches an important milestone on Oct. 17, when city staff host a celebratory unveiling of the likely path linking University City, uptown and Pineville.
The celebration, including short walking and cycling tours, will take place 1-5 p.m. at Captain James Jack Park, on the Little Sugar Creek Greenway near 4th Street and North Kings Drive.

The open house will celebrate the conclusion of the Master Plan to identify the alignment of this 26-mile trail stretching from the City of Pineville, through Center City and on to the UNC Charlotte campus and the Cabarrus County line. Much of the XCLT (Cross Charlotte Trail) will run along creeks and incorporate existing and future Mecklenburg County greenways including Toby Creek, Little Sugar Creek and Mallard Creek greenways.
The main exception is the 4- to 5-mile stretch with no major creeks that lies between University City and the NoDa community. Planners have invited public suggestions for possible overland routes at public meetings over the past several months. Come to the Oct. 17 celebration to see which path the planners now recommend.
Take the bike and walking tours
As part of the celebration, City staff will host bicycle and walking tours throughout the afternoon. Tour groups will stop at locations along the trail to hear more about the future development of the XCLT.
Walking tours will cover about 1 mile and last about 45 minutes.Bike tours will cover about 4 miles and last about 75 minutes.
Cyclists can bring their own bikes or sign up for one of 10 free B-Cycle bikes available for each bike tour. Bike tours are limited to a maximum of 35 people.

So pleased that University City will be connected to the XCLT trails. We have excellent trails now through UNCC and with Mallard Creek and Clarks Creek Greenways. Will there be a sidewalk or paved path along the Lynx line on North Tryon the way that there is on parts of the line in South Charlotte.
