The new street grid features seven roundabouts (shown as pink circles on map)

Although I-485’s opening date has been pushed back from this month to March 2015, several streets around the I-485 interchange with Prosperity Church Road opened for traffic this week. The novel intersection features three parallel roads and two high-density communities. Here are details:

In conjunction with work completed by the state on the I-485 final section through University City, the Charlotte and NC transportation departments opened the  street network connections in the Prosperity Village area on Wednesday.

These openings, shown in red on the map, are:
Ridge Road (map key 1) – New roadway segment extending west from Prosperity Church Road. to the new Benfield Road.
Benfield Road (map key 2) – New roadway segment will extend from the intersection of DeArmon Road/Johnston-Oehler Road/Docia Crossing Road north to an extension of Ridge Rd.
Craven Thomas Road (map key 3) – Northern (westbound) frontage road adjacent to the new alignment of I-485 between Prosperity Ridge and Benfield Roads.
Robert Helms Road (map key 4) – Southern (eastbound) frontage road adjacent to the new alignment of I-485 between Prosperity Ridge and Benfield Roads.
Prosperity Ridge Road (map key 5) – New roadway segment extending south from Jessica Leigh Lane to a new connection with Johnston-Oehler Road.

The ramps to and from I-485 will remain closed until freeway construction is complete, currently scheduled for March 2015.

New street grid has 7 roundabouts

Motorists should be aware that the following intersections will be roundabouts and should expect increased cross traffic:
• Craven Thomas Road and Benfield Road
• Robert Helms Road and Benfield Road
• Craven Thomas Road and Prosperity Church Road (will now have three approaches instead of two)
• Robert Helms Road and Prosperity Church Road (will now have three approaches instead of two)
