Fun Things to Do

Some of Charlotte’s hottest events take place in the coolest spaces in University City. Concerts at PNC Pavilion, NASCAR races at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the International Festival at UNC Charlotte are just the start. With annual events like the University City Wine Fest and the Healthy UCity Race Series, there is always something fun to do!

Farmer’s Market

University City Farmer’s Market is a seasonal market that will open this fall 2020 at the lake at Shoppes at University Place. The only farmer’s market in University City, shoppers will find fresh local produce and food preparation programs. The market will open every Saturday in October from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors will include some of Charlotte’s best local farmers, artisanal food makers and pop-up chefs. Expect to experience weekly live music and local chef demonstrations. Visit University City Farmer’s Market to learn more.

Festivals for all ages!

University City’s scenic lake and charming boardwalk at the Shoppes at University Place hosts the annual University City Wine Fest.  Over 25 wineries provide more than 100 wines from over 25 wineries to sample while guests stroll the boardwalk and enjoy live music and interactive entertainment. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or an intrigued beginner, wineries and winery representatives will welcome you as they share their knowledge along with samples of their art.  This annual event raises money for our local libraries. Check out our video to watch the fun!

University City also is home to the Charlotte KidsFest – a special event just for kids!  The mission of the Charlotte Kids Fest is to inspire and motivate young minds with professional artistic, creative, educational and playful experiences that transform a child’s understanding of the world around them and what is possible. Located on UNC Charlotte campus grounds, the festival is divided into four main zones: learn, play, create and discover. With food and fun activities this fall festival is a must on any parents’ calendar! Proceeds from the festival benefit the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation.

Major college sports and much more

Living in University City provides easy access to our region’s No. 1 public university, UNC Charlotte. If you like college athletics, you’ll love cheering the 49ers men’s and women’s NCAA teams. Several are nationally ranked. Visit Charlotte 49ers.

Music, dance and theater performances by students, faculty and visiting artists are great entertainment at very affordable prices – sometimes even free! The university’s main venue, Belk Theater in Robinson Hall, provides impressive acoustics and excellent seating close to the performers. Explore upcoming performances and exhibitions. If you take in just one major campus event, make it the annual International Festival. Each October, more than 20,000 people celebrate the global diversity of UNC Charlotte’s student and faculty – now representing more than 50 nations! Learn more.

Way more than a library!

University City Regional Library is the busiest branch in our county’s nationally recognized library system. The heavily used research area houses special collections ranging from medical materials to an exhaustive database of grant-funding sources. Many adults and children come for the extensive programs. The library often hosts community meetings, too.

Escape, naturally

University City has great natural escapes – even close to many offices. Twelve miles of greenways link UNC Charlotte, University Research Park, light rail stations and a dozen neighborhoods. UNC Charlotte’s botanical gardens and greenhouse showcase rhododendron, azaleas and other Carolinas flora. Explore our new pop-up parks throughout University City and get lost in Reedy Creek Park and Nature Preserve. The 850-acre oasis includes athletic fields, playgrounds, fishing ponds and a competition-level disc golf course, plus 10 miles of forest trails (watch for deer, beaver, red-tailed hawks and barred owls!) and a nature center that offers programs and camps.

Golf, soccer or cricket, anyone?

Athletes will find many places to play here, including three 18-hole golf courses and three parks with extensive sports fields. A cricket league holds matches at Reedy Creek Park. Mallard Creek Park hosts major youth baseball tournaments.

University City invites, welcomes and entertains.
