University City Wine Fest

University City’s scenic lake and charming boardwalk at the Shoppes at University Place is the location for the University City Wine Fest. More than 100 wines from over 25 wineries will be available to sample while guests stroll the boardwalk and enjoy live music and interactive entertainment. A variety of old and new as well as exciting wines from across the US and globe will be featured for tasting. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or an intrigued beginner, wineries and winery representatives will welcome you as they share their knowledge along with samples of their art. The University City Wine Fest was created to complement our community wine culture, promote the wine industry and raise funds for literacy programs at our University City Regional Library. Charlotte Kids Fest

The annual Charlotte KidsFest at UNC Charlotte provides high-quality educational and fun entertainment in a family friendly atmosphere. It’s a festival that inspires and motivates young minds with professional artistic, creative, educational and playful experiences that transform a child’s understanding of the world around them and what is possible. With four themed exploration zones and feature multiple stages, University City showcases more than 100 exciting activities, performances and educational experiences. KidsFest programming is creatively adventurous for kids and adults to enjoy together. This is a free event that invites everyone to celebrate their creativity and curiosity and embrace their inner child!

Charlotte Motor Speedway

Our region is home to two-thirds of all NASCAR race teams, and Charlotte Motor Speedway in University City is the Mecca of motor sports. Enjoy a week of race events each spring around Memorial Day (the Coca-Cola 600) and early October (Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup Series), along with the Fall AutoFair in late September, the Summer Legends Series of amateur racers all summer, drag racing at the Zmax drag strip and, yes, the most extravagant show of Christmas lights (3 million-plus in 800 displays) each December. Visit Charlotte Motor Speedway.

UNC Charlotte Multicultural Events

The international hub of Charlotte, UNC Charlotte hosts the granddaddy of Charlotte multicultural events each October, the International Festival. People from more than 50 countries offer displays, food and entertainment to 20,000-plus visitors. International Film Fest – View about 20 films from around the globe at the International Film Fest in March and April at UNC Charlotte.  View film schedule. Science and Technology Expo – Browse 100-plus hands-on science activities and presentations at the Expo, which takes place in mid-April.  Learn more. Homecoming and Football – UNC Charlotte’s football team is only a couple of years old, but 110,000 alumni make Fall Homecoming Weekend an event for anyone who loves 49er green.  Learn more.

Celebrating Nature

Two annual events celebrate our native wildlife and plants: Hummingbird Festival – Several thousand people flock to our Reedy Creek Nature Center and Preserve each August for this festival focused on one of Charlotte’s (and Central America’s) most amazing migratory creatures. Learn more. Botanical Gardens Spring and Fall Plant Sales – The 10 acres of botanical gardens and greenhouse at UNC Charlotte celebrate native NC species. The spring plant sale in mid-April coincides with the high point of Carolinas azaleas and rhododendron, which flourish in the botanical garden glens. The fall plant sale in mid-October takes place during peak fall color time. Learn more.

Outdoor Concerts

Free lakeside concerts at University Place – Our community’s town center regularly sponsors a series of free outdoor performances next to the lake. Bring a lawn chair or grab an outdoor table at several restaurants with patio seating. Or rent a paddleboat and cruise the lake while the bands play on (These boats CAN’T sink, honest!). The spring series takes place in April. Check the website’s Events Calendar for other performances.

World-class artists at PNC Music Pavilion – Our 19,000-seat outdoor musical venue packs ‘em in from mid-spring to mid-autumn.  See who’s coming.
