UNC Charlotte is the cornerstone of University City.  This 1,000-acre campus adds vibrancy & vitality to the fabric of University City by attracting quality students and creating a pipeline of talented workers for our area businesses.  More than 28,000 students now attend North Carolina’s only state university within 90 miles of Charlotte. The university offers 92 Bachelor’s degrees, 59 Master’s degrees, and 21 Doctoral degree programs with a staggering 28% growth over the last 8 years. Charlotte Research Institute (CRI) – UNC Charlotte’s main campus added the 100-acre the Charlotte Research Institute in 2005.  Regionally, CRI works with the community and the campus to accelerate technology commercialization, increase the growth of entrepreneurial ventures, develop intellectual capital, as well as partner in new business and research ventures to spur economic growth in the community, region, and state.

Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) – The CRI campus has several buildings with specific areas of focus including EPIC which is a collaborative industry/education partnership formed by UNC Charlotte to supply highly trained engineers to meet industry demands and provide sustainable support by increasing capacity for applied energy research.  This program compliments the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), an independent, nonprofit organization at the forefront of the constantly evolving research on energy delivery, bringing in thousands of researchers from around the world to University City.

Partnership, Outreach, and Research to Accelerate Learning (PORTAL)PORTAL building is UNC Charlotte’s latest commitment to university-industry partnerships designed to spur business growth and job creation as well as promote research and innovation in the Charlotte region.  PORTAL houses the Ventureprise business incubator and the technology transfer office which helps clients with invention submissions, material transfer agreements and other needs.  PORTAL also has secure areas for faculty members to conduct more classified research for the Defense Department and other federal agencies.
