Honoring Shane Hockensmith and Giant University Bikes – A Legacy of Movement in University City

For over 27 years, Giant University City has been more than a neighborhood bike shop—it has been a trusted resource and gathering place for University City’s active and diverse community. At the heart of it all has been Shane Hockensmith, a dedicated small business owner whose love for cycling and community has touched thousands.

Shane opened the shop in 1998 with a mission: leave behind the corporate grind and build something meaningful. “I didn’t start this business just to sell bikes,” Shane recalls. “I started it because I believed in what bikes can do for people and communities.” That belief grew into a thriving business that not only weathered economic shifts and retail challenges but helped shape the identity of University City.

The shop served a cross-section of the region—UNC Charlotte students needing reliable transportation across campus, professionals commuting to work via the Toby and Mallard Creek Greenways, and families discovering the joy of weekend rides together. Located at the head of the Toby Creek Greenway, Giant University Bikes became a beacon for both seasoned cyclists and first-time riders.

“Shane embodies what University City is all about—entrepreneurship, community, and authenticity,” said Keith Stanley, President and CEO of University City Partners. “His business has supported our mobility goals, energized our public spaces, and anchored our sense of place. Shane’s legacy is one of movement, connection, and local pride.”

Shane’s influence extended well beyond the storefront. He co-led the University City Duathlon, advocated for greenway expansion, and consistently supported local initiatives alongside University City Partners. His team—including longtime shop manager Mark and staffers like Wyatt and Jody—carried his spirit of service forward daily.

As Shane and his wife Kelley enter retirement, we offer not just congratulations but sincere gratitude. Giant University Bikes helped us move—physically and forward as a community.
