University City’s hotel hub rolls out the welcome mat

UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel and Conference Center

UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel and Conference Center will open in early 2021

University City’s popular hotel hub keeps growing and improving, thanks to easy access to uptown, campus, Charlotte Motor Speedway and University Research Park.

Completion of the UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, Hyatt Place, and Fairfield Inn and Suites will bring our hub to 22 facilities near North Tryon Street and Harris Boulevard.

Hampton Inn and Suites, a short walk from the McCullough Drive LYNX Station, recently finished a refresh. See our directory (below) to learn who else is here!

The UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel and Conference Center will bring new energy to the North Tryon Street edge of campus when the facility opens in early 2021.

The 221-key full-service hotel will have a two-story lobby, specialty restaurant and premier conference facilities designed to attract higher-education conferences, promote distant-learning business, and host both private and university-tied social functions.

Besides hosting many campus events, the facility will certainly attract visitors coming to Charlotte for major events in uptown. An overhead walkway will link the hotel directly to the JW Clay Blvd LYNX Station. Learn more

Hampton Inn welcomes new LYNX-attuned guests

LYNX train rolls past the Hampton Inn

A LYNX train rolls past the Hampton Inn on North Tryon Street

The Hampton Inn Charlotte-University Place at 8419 N. Tryon St. has a fresh new curb appeal these days, thanks to a major exterior remodeling completed early this year.

The Hilton property is attracting many new guests thanks to its location within a 5-minute walk of the McCullough Drive LYNX light-rail station on North Tryon Street.

“The LYNX definitely is a game changer, for sure,” says Lisa Hughes, sales coordinator for the Hampton Inn.

The 126-room hotel opened in 1990 and serves a broad mix of business, social, leisure-travel and sports-team business, Hughes says.

The direct LYNX connection to center city Charlotte and UNC Charlotte has brought many new visitors – for business, for sports events and for major shows at the Spectrum Center.

“Absolutely,” says the hotel’s general manager, Corie Blocker. “As people get used to this area and the fact that they can park and take light rail into uptown, that business is only growing.”

McCullough

The McCullough LYNX Station is less than a 5-minute walk from the Hampton Inn

The hotel’s connection to campus – just a mile away – has gotten stronger thanks to the LYNX. The Blue Line ends at the UNC Charlotte Main Station, a short walk from the Popp Martin Student Union.

Hampton Inn has many families who come to visit the campus with prospective students and to visit them later once they become 49ers, Blocker says.

Hampton Inn makes those visits easier with a special $99 room rate for anyone visiting UNC Charlotte, Blocker adds.

Other hotels are riding the LYNX

Other hotels close to the McCullough Station also are promoting their easy access to the light-rail line via their websites.

Extended Stay America, with hotels on both East McCullough Drive and University Executive Park Drive, says on their websites that both are newly renovated.
