Spotlight shines on UNC Charlotte performances and exhibits

Faculty Jazz Quintet

The Faculty Jazz Quintet will present “A Tribute to Charlie Parker” on Aug. 29

Some of the best offerings this fall on Charlotte’s entertainment scene are right in our University City backyards, so to speak.

Jazz master Charlie “Bird” Parker, pioneering choreographer Paul Taylor, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker and celebrated composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Igor Stravinsky and Leonard Bernstein will appear, through their works, at UNC Charlotte.

The College of Arts and Architecture recently released its Fall 2016 event calendar, and it is full of performances, exhibitions and lectures featuring great artists of past and present. Some performances feature talented UNC Charlotte students; some will showcase faculty who are renowned artists in their own right.

The season will open on August 29, when the Friends and Faculty Concert Series presents “A Tribute to Charlie Parker” in Rowe Recital Hall. The Faculty Jazz Quintet will perform.

The many performances and exhibitions that follow include:

  • The Taylor 2 Dance Company, in Belk Theater on Sept. 30.
  • The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra in Belk Theater on Oct. 5.
  • UNC Charlotte Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble & Combos, and Chamber Orchestra – in Belk Theater, performing Oct. 3, 4 and 6, respectively.
  • The Theatre Department will present “The Aliens” on Oct. 14-15 and 20-22 in Robinson Hall’s Arts Quad. Winner of the 2010 Obie for Best New American Play, this story of three young men in a Vermont coffeehouse has been praised as “gentle and extraordinarily beautiful” by the NY Times.
