If you like the arts, you will absolutely love the next five weeks at UNC Charlotte. Student and faculty performances will range from a rare version of “Hamlet” in the intimate Black Box Theater to a Faculty and Friends tribute to composer in residence Dr. Walter Hartley. Three student art exhibitions will also have their opening receptions.

Performances at a glance

Here’s a quick look at what’s in store. Most performances will take place at Robinson Hall, the beautiful performing arts center visible from University City Boulevard. The November calendar through Thanksgiving includes:

• Hamlet (version Q1) – Nov. 4-15 – Major presentation of the rarely performed 1603 version of Hamlet in the Black Box Theater at Robinson Hall. This is part of 6-year project to present all 36 of Shakespeare’s major works. READ MORE
• 2D/3D Fine Arts exhibition and opening event – Opening reception and panel discussion to honor graduating fine-arts seniors on Nov. 11 at Rowe Art Galleries. Exhibition Nov. 9-13.
• Graphic Design BFA – Opening reception and panel discussion to honor graduating graphic arts seniors on Nov. 16 at Rowe Art Galleries. Exhibition Nov.16-20.

  Dr. Walter Hartley

  Faculty and Friends concert – Nov. 17 – Several faculty members will perform compositions by Dr. Walter Hartley. After retiring from Fredonia University in New York, pianist-composer Hartley (he has created more than 300 works) and his wife moved to Charlotte, where Hartley became composer in residence at UNC Charlotte. This concert honors his work. Rowe Recital Hall. READ MORE

• Philharmonia concert – Nov. 18 – The string repertory orchestra of university students and members of the public, ages 14 and up. Rowe Recital Hall.
• Fall Dance Concert – Nov. 19-22 – Student concert of diverse dance styles. Stay after on Nov. 22 for after-concert Latin dance party.
• Wind Ensemble concert – Nov. 23

December concert blitz

Several December concerts in the Belk Theater at Robinson Hall will showcase student work for the fall semester. Performances can range from experimental to traditional, including some holiday tunes. Tickets for most shows are $8 for the general public.

• Symphonic Band – Dec 3 “Art of Student Teaching” opening exhibition in Rowe Arts Galleries – Dec 5
• Percussion Ensemble concert – Dec. 7
• Men’s and Women’s choirs – Dec. 8
• University Chorale and Chamber Orchestra – Dec. 9. University Chorale performs regularly across the Carolinas. In February it will join early music ensemble Carolina Pro Musica to perform Italian madrigals and oratorio excerpts in Charlotte and at Belmont Abbey. READ MORE
