Get personal documents shredded for free June 27

Securely shred your personal documents for free on June 27 at the Community Shred Event and Sustainability Fair. Professional shredders will destroy your documents 9 am-noon at the IKEA parking lot, 8300 IKEA Blvd. Nonprofit groups will also collect your unwanted household goods, computers, bikes, and eyeglasses, and the police will safely and securely dispose of outdated medicines.

Event details

  • WHAT: An opportunity to shred personal documents for free, dispose of outdated medicines, donate clothing and goods to help agencies and learn about ways to protect the environment. Open to the public. Hosted by District 4 City Councilman Greg Phipps
  • WHEN: Saturday, June 27 at 9 am – noon RAIN OR SHINE
  • WHERE: IKEA parking lot – 8300 IKEA Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28262 CLICK for directions
  • FREE: There is no cost to shred up to three bags or boxes of personal papers during this event.

Shredding details

Shredding companies will be onsite to safely and securely shred your personal documents. Police will assist.

  • Materials you can shred: Standard paper, envelopes, manila folders and staples.
  • Quantity: Up to three sturdy boxes or bags full of papers. Boxes will be returned to you.

Medicine details

Outdated and unused medicines can harm the environment if thrown down a drain or toilet. Some medications also pose a health risk if taken by others. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police will take your outdated or unused medicines and dispose of them safely.

Donate clothing, glasses, bicycles and household items

Four nonprofit groups will collect your used items and provide them to others who need them. You can receive tax receipts for donations for most items.

  • Clothing and household items – Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont sells donated items to fund job-training programs and sheltered workshops. Learn more
  • Old computers and other electronics (both working and non-working). The Grid by Goodwill Industries will collect and either resell or recycle. Learn more
  • Used eyeglasses – The Lions Club redistributes eyeglasses worldwide to people who cannot afford glasses otherwise. Learn more
  • Used bikes – Trips for Kids uses donated bikes to encourage children and teens to learn skills and become cyclists. Bikes not used directly with the children are fixed up and sold at the Re-Cyclery to provide funds for the program. Learn more

Learn about these services

Representatives from Keep Charlotte Beautiful, Storm Water Services, CharMeck 311, the City of Charlotte Sustainability Team and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will have information tables and giveaways throughout the event.
